Who Will Be CSK’s Next Head Coach? MS Dhoni’s Preference Puts Hemang Badani in the Spotlight

The big question surrounding Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2027 is who will take over as the franchise’s next head coach after the departure of Stephen Fleming.

Fleming’s exit ended an extraordinary 18-year association with CSK, during which he became one of the most successful coaches in IPL history. Now, the franchise is considering possible replacements, and Hemang Badani has emerged as one of the frontrunners.

MS Dhoni Wants an Indian Coach?

According to a report by The Indian Express, MS Dhoni has been pushing for an Indian-led support staff, which has strengthened Badani’s case for the position.

CSK CEO and Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan has reportedly indicated that Dhoni has been entrusted with an important role in the process of finding Fleming’s successor. However, the franchise is still evaluating its options, and no official appointment has been announced yet.

Why Hemang Badani?

Badani brings considerable experience as both a player and coach.

He served as Delhi Capitals’ head coach during the 2025 and 2026 IPL seasons. Although Delhi did not win the IPL title during his tenure, Badani has built a strong coaching profile through his work in various T20 leagues.

He has also been involved with teams in competitions such as the SA20, ILT20 and LPL, making him an experienced candidate for a franchise like CSK.

His understanding of Indian cricket and experience in T20 environments could make him an attractive option as Chennai looks to rebuild its coaching setup.

Fleming’s 18-Year CSK Era Comes to an End

Stephen Fleming joined CSK as a player in 2008 and took over as head coach in 2009.

During his coaching tenure, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. His departure therefore marks the end of one of the longest and most successful coaching partnerships in the tournament’s history.

CSK Searching for a Comeback

CSK last won the IPL title in 2023, when they defeated Gujarat Titans in the final. Before that, the franchise had won the tournament in 2021.

The team has since gone through a difficult phase, making the appointment of the next head coach particularly important as CSK prepares for the next IPL cycle.

With MS Dhoni’s influence, Hemang Badani’s coaching experience and the franchise’s need for a fresh approach, the coaching decision could play a major role in determining CSK’s future.

For now, Hemang Badani is a leading candidate—but the final decision is still pending.
