EC’s Voter Roll Drive Sparks Political Firestorm; TMC and Stalin Slam Gyanesh Kumar

Election Commission of India’s nationwide exercise to carry out a “Special Intensive Revision” (SIR) of electoral rolls spanning 51 crore voters across 12 states has triggered a fierce backlash from opposition parties. Trinamool Congress (TMC) accused the CEC Gyanesh Kumar of having “blood on his hands” and described the exercise as a politically‑motivated purge. In West Bengal, TMC leaders have held street protests denouncing the revision as a tool to disenfranchise genuine voters while aligning with the ruling party’s interests. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin approached the Supreme Court, claiming the revision exercise is aimed at deleting legitimate voters and undermining democratic rights. The EC, for its part, described the cleanup as essential for removing duplicate or ineligible entries and maintaining election integrity.
