Latest on Mirzapur train accident

Six people were killed when they were struck by the Kalka Mail Express at Chunar railway station in the Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh while crossing the tracks during the early hours of Wednesday. The incident took place amid a rush of devotees on the occasion of Kartik Purnima, as trains reached the station and large crowds attempted to cross the tracks to reach riverbank ghats. Confirmed by local railway officials, at least six were fatally injured when the high‑speed train ran over them, and more are injured and undergoing treatment.
Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, took cognisance of the tragedy and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased. He also directed district‑level officials and railway authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry into the safety protocols at the station and take immediate relief measures for the victims’ kin, including financial assistance and support for the injured.
Railway police and district magistrate officials said that initial investigations suggest the victims attempted to cross the track outside the designated foot‑overbridge or under‑protected crossing. Crowding, inadequate crowd‑control infrastructure, and reduced visibility in early morning hours are being cited as possible contributing factors. An emergency call was made and rescue teams rushed to the scene; medical assistance is being provided, and bodies have been sent for post‑mortem examination.
Railway authorities have suspended movement on the affected line segment for clearance and are reviewing whether additional crowd control, fencing, signage and public‑address announcements can be deployed at Chunar and similar busy pilgrimage‑linked stations to prevent recurrence of such disasters.
