Major Accident Averted in Uttar Pradesh: Smoke Triggers Panic on Gorakhpur–Lucknow Intercity Express, Passengers Safe

The incident occurred near the overbridge on the Ramnagar–Fatehpur road when commuters detected a strong burning smell followed by visible smoke inside a coach. Initially assuming it to be brake-related smoke, passengers soon realized the situation was worsening.

Chaos Inside the Coach

Eyewitnesses reported that the smoke intensified within moments, creating panic. Shouts of “Smoke! Get down!” spread rapidly through the coach as people rushed toward the exits.

Parents were seen grabbing their children, while some passengers fled barefoot—leaving behind footwear, bags, and personal belongings in urgency. The atmosphere turned chaotic as the smoke thickened.

Emergency Chain Pulled, Train Halts Instantly

Responding swiftly, passengers pulled the emergency chain, bringing the Intercity Express to a quick halt just before the bridge. The prompt brake application prevented the smoke from worsening and allowed passengers to disembark safely in an open area.

Railway Technical Team Prevents Disaster

The railway technical team reached the spot soon after, carrying out an immediate inspection. Their timely intervention prevented what could have turned into a fire or a mechanical failure-induced accident.

Officials stated that while the source of the smoke is still being investigated, preliminary suspicion points to a technical fault in the coach that caused abnormal heating.

Another Incident in Barabanki: Truck Falls on Railway Track

In a separate incident the same day, a truck overturned onto a railway track in Barabanki, raising further concerns about potential disruptions. Railway authorities acted quickly to clear the obstruction, ensuring no trains were endangered on that route.

Both incidents highlight the importance of rapid response, alert passengers, and well-coordinated railway safety protocols that helped prevent tragedy.

Passengers Praise Quick Response

Many passengers expressed relief and gratitude toward fellow commuters and railway staff for acting swiftly.

One passenger said:

“If we hadn’t pulled the chain immediately, things could have gone terribly wrong. Everyone helped each other.”

No injuries were reported, and normal rail operations resumed soon after the coach was checked and declared safe for towing.
