Mark Carney to Meet Modi in Landmark Visit as Canada-India Relations Get a Reset
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrives in India for a four-day visit marked by high-level talks and efforts to reset and strengthen bilateral ties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on trade, strategic cooperation and a new economic partnership agreement.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has begun a historic four-day official visit to India, culminating in a key meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi aimed at resetting bilateral relations that had been strained in recent years.
Carney landed in Mumbai on February 27 and engaged with business leaders and officials before traveling to the capital for high-level talks scheduled around March 2. The meetings are expected to cover a broad agenda, including deepening economic ties, expanding trade cooperation, energy and nuclear partnerships, critical minerals, technology, and artificial intelligence.
A focal point of the visit is the negotiation of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that aims to roughly double Canada-India two-way trade by 2030 and unlock new avenues for cooperation in multiple sectors.
The trip also represents a diplomatic reset after tensions over past years, signaling both governments’ interest in building a more resilient, forward-looking partnership that goes beyond previous disputes and focuses on mutual economic and strategic interests.
