Rare Earths and Data Centres: India Backs Domestic Industry Amid Rising Global Tensions

India is stepping up support for its domestic rare earths and data centre industries as growing geopolitical tensions expose vulnerabilities in global supply chains and digital infrastructure.

Rare earth elements — critical for electronics, electric vehicles, defence systems and renewable energy — are largely dominated by a handful of countries, making access increasingly strategic. Indian policymakers are now prioritising local exploration, processing and manufacturing to reduce dependence on imports and secure long-term supply for key industries.

At the same time, India is pushing to expand its data centre ecosystem to meet surging demand driven by digital services, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data localisation rules. Incentives at both the central and state levels are being rolled out to attract investment, improve power and connectivity infrastructure, and encourage domestic and foreign players to build capacity within the country.

Officials say the twin focus on critical minerals and digital infrastructure reflects a broader strategy to strengthen economic resilience, protect national security interests and position India as a reliable alternative in global value chains increasingly shaped by political risk.

As competition between major powers intensifies, India’s push to nurture strategic industries highlights its ambition to balance growth with self-reliance — leveraging policy support to turn global uncertainty into an opportunity for domestic manufacturing and technology development.
