Telangana Horror: 19 Killed as Bus and Truck Collide; Govt Orders Magisterial Probe

A clash between a gravel‑laden tipper truck and a state‑run bus on the Hyderabad‑Bijapur highway in Chevella mandal, in Rangareddy district, Telangana, resulted in the death of at least 19 people and injuries to 24 others on Monday morning. The bus, belonging to the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) and carrying around 70 to 72 passengers, was en route from Tandur to Hyderabad when the tipper truck—allegedly overloaded with nearly 40‑50 tonnes of gravel, far above its permitted load—veered into its lane and crashed head‑on. Initial reports indicate the tipper was attempting to overtake another vehicle and may have swerved to avoid a pothole, leading to its entry into the opposite lane. Eyewitnesses described horrific scenes as gravel spilled into the bus’s front rows, burying passengers under the load. The deceased include 10 women and a 10‑month‑old baby, alongside both vehicle drivers. The Telangana government has announced an ex‑gratia payment of ₹7 lakh for each deceased’s family (₹5 lakh from the state, ₹2 lakh from TGSRTC) and ordered a magisterial and departmental inquiry into the crash. Rescue operations involved local authorities and JCBs to clear the wreckage, and the injured have been shifted to hospitals in Chevella and Hyderabad for treatment. Investigation teams are focusing on allegations of overloading, speed, absence of a divider on the highway stretch and the safety of the bus infrastructure.
