“No Compromise on Honour, Legacy of Vande Mataram”: BJP Passes Resolution Against Congress Decision

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has passed a resolution defending the full historical legacy of Vande Mataram and strongly opposing the Congress' decision to restrict its rendition to the first two stanzas at party functions.

The resolution was passed on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at a meeting of the BJP's newly appointed office-bearers. BJP president Nitin Nabin presided over the meeting and later shared details of the resolution on X.

BJP Condemns Congress Decision

The BJP resolution strongly condemned the Congress Working Committee's decision of August 19, 2026, to reaffirm its 1937 resolution under which only the first two verses of Vande Mataram are sung at Congress functions.

The BJP said it “strongly condemns and unequivocally opposes” the decision, arguing that the national song's historical and cultural significance should not be compromised for political reasons.

Nabin said the party would oppose any attempt to subject Vande Mataram to “communal pressure, political appeasement or narrow vote-bank politics.”

Nationwide Campaign Planned

The BJP has announced a nationwide campaign to spread awareness about the history, meaning, national significance and heritage of Vande Mataram.

According to the resolution, the campaign will aim to take the story and significance of the national song to every corner of the country.

Nabin said the BJP would work to protect the “honour, dignity, heritage and national character” of what the party described as Purna Vande Mataram.

Focus on Younger Generation

The BJP also plans to launch an awareness campaign specifically targeting younger generations.

The party said the initiative will highlight the complete national song, described in the resolution as comprising six verses, along with its historical background and association with India's freedom struggle.

The BJP said the objective is to ensure that future generations understand the memories and national sentiment associated with Vande Mataram and that its history is not forgotten.

Gandhi's Statement to Be Highlighted

As part of the campaign, the BJP also plans to disseminate a statement attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, in which he described Vande Mataram as an “anti-imperialist slogan” associated with what he called the “purest national sentiment.”

The BJP's latest resolution is likely to intensify the political debate with the Congress over the national song, its historical legacy and the manner in which it should be performed at political and public events.
