Dramatic GO Train vs. Dump Truck Collision in Markham Captured on Video
No injuries reported as Metrolinx shares powerful safety reminder following Thursday morning crash at Kennedy Road crossing
Markham, ON – A startling incident unfolded Thursday morning when a GO train struck the rear of a dump truck at a railway crossing near Unionville GO Station, highlighting the critical importance of rail safety.
Metrolinx released cab-view footage of the collision, showing the train approaching the truck with its horn blaring. Drivers on both sides of the truck waited as the train came to a sudden stop after impact. Despite the dramatic scene, Metrolinx confirmed that no injuries occurred.
The collision occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. at Kennedy Road near Unionville GO Station, Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay shared in a LinkedIn post. “Events like this are a powerful reminder that safety at crossings can never be taken for granted,” Lindsay wrote. “Please obey all signals and warning lights. NEVER enter a crossing unless you are certain you can fully clear it, and never stop on the tracks.”
The crash caused delays along the Stouffville GO line throughout the morning, inconveniencing commuters. Lindsay thanked affected passengers for their patience, emphasizing the importance of safety for both drivers and rail passengers.
Following the collision, York Regional Police temporarily closed Kennedy Road between Carlton Road and Hwy. 7. The road reopened around 12:30 p.m. after investigators ensured the scene was safe. The truck driver was unharmed.
This incident serves as a stark reminder to all drivers: approaching railway crossings requires caution and vigilance. Even a momentary lapse in judgment can lead to potentially catastrophic consequences.
