PM Modi to Flag Off India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on Kolkata‑Guwahati Route
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train between Kolkata and Guwahati in January 2026, offering modern overnight travel at competitive fares.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first‑ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train soon, marking a major milestone in the modernization of Indian Railways. The train will operate on the Kolkata–Guwahati route, enhancing long‑distance overnight travel with modern comfort and affordability.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the inaugural service is expected to go operational within the next 15–20 days, with a probable flag‑off date around January 18 or 19, 2026. He said the project has received all necessary clearances and that Prime Minister Modi will officiate the launch in the coming days.
Unlike the high‑speed daytime Vande Bharat trains that primarily offer chair car seating, this new sleeper variant includes 16 coaches equipped with overnight sleeping berths, making it the first in its class designed specifically for long distances. The service aims to provide a faster, safer, and more comfortable option than traditional express trains for overnight journeys between the Northeast and eastern India.
Railway officials highlighted that the fares have been structured to be significantly lower than air travel costs on the same route. According to announcements, 3rd AC tickets (including meals) are expected to be around ₹2,300, with 2nd AC at approximately ₹3,000 and 1st AC at around ₹3,600 — offering a cost‑effective alternative to flyers.
The sleeper Vande Bharat train has already passed successful high‑speed trials, achieving up to 180 km/h under supervision from the Commissioner of Railway Safety, showcasing its technological and safety credentials ahead of the official rollout.
Once operational, the Kolkata‑Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will not only strengthen connectivity between West Bengal and Assam but also serve as a flagship example of Indian Railways’ push toward more modern, passenger‑friendly long‑distance travel solutions.
