Rajasthan Civic Polls: AIMIM’s ‘Kite’ Won’t Fly, Why Did Owaisi’s Party Lose Its Symbol?

AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, has faced a major setback just before the Rajasthan urban local body elections. The party will not be able to contest the polls using its traditional ‘Kite’ election symbol following the Rajasthan High Court’s decision.

AIMIM has been trying to expand its political presence in Rajasthan, with a particular focus on strengthening its support among the state’s Muslim electorate. The election symbol was therefore considered important for the party’s campaign and voter recognition.

The controversy comes as the nomination process for elections to 309 urban local bodies in Rajasthan has begun. AIMIM had sought permission to use the ‘Kite’ symbol for its candidates.

However, the Rajasthan State Election Commission refused to allot the symbol. The commission cited AIMIM’s status as a state-recognized political party in Telangana, arguing that this recognition did not automatically allow the party to use the same reserved symbol in Rajasthan.

AIMIM challenged the decision in the High Court, seeking permission to contest the Rajasthan civic elections with the ‘Kite’ symbol. However, the court’s decision has now effectively ruled out the party using the symbol in these elections.

As a result, AIMIM candidates will have to contest as independent candidates, creating a fresh challenge for the party. Without a common symbol, AIMIM could face difficulties in maintaining a uniform identity among its candidates and communicating its presence to voters.

The development is particularly significant because AIMIM is seeking to establish itself as a political force in Rajasthan. The party is also preparing to contest the urban local body elections in alliance with Hanuman Beniwal’s Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP).

The alliance is being viewed as an attempt to create a new political equation involving different sections of Rajasthan’s electorate.

The loss of the ‘Kite’ symbol could now force AIMIM to rethink its campaign strategy. Candidates will have to rely on their individual election symbols, potentially making it more challenging for voters to identify them as part of the same political organization.

The upcoming civic elections will therefore be an important test for AIMIM’s expansion strategy in Rajasthan. The key question now is whether Owaisi’s party can make an impact without its familiar election symbol.
