Police in Bihar have arrested eight people in connection with the lynching of cloth vendor Mohammad Athar Hussain in Nawada district. The victim died from injuries sustained in a brutal mob attack, and authorities are investigating the case
NAWADA, BIHAR — Police in Bihar have arrested eight people in connection with the mob lynching of a cloth vendor that has sparked outrage and a criminal investigation, officials said on Tuesday. The victim, identified as Mohammad Athar Hussain, a 40‑year‑old clothes seller, was brutally assaulted by a group of villagers in Bhattapar village under the Roh police station area on December 5 after his bicycle broke down and he stopped to seek help, according to police and media reports.
Hussain was attacked after individuals in the group asked his name and religious identity — allegations of which family members say led to discrimination and violence. During the assault, he was beaten with rods and bricks, his ears and fingertips were cut with pliers, and he was reportedly branded with a heated iron. He sustained severe injuries and was moved through several hospitals before succumbing to his wounds on December 12, local authorities said.
Following his death, police filed a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including unlawful assembly, rioting, grievous hurt, and murder. So far, eight accused have been arrested, and further raids are underway to apprehend additional suspects named in the FIR filed by Hussain’s wife, Shabnam Parveen. Police continue to investigate the motive and sequence of events that led to the violent attack as public criticism intensifies over the brutality of the lynching.
Family members and locals have condemned the incident, calling for swift justice and accountability, while authorities assured that action will be taken against those responsible once all suspects are in custody and the evidence collected
