Europe & India to Work Together to Shape a New Global Order: EU Chief

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, attending India’s Republic Day celebrations as chief guests, stressed that Europe and India share a commitment to jointly shaping a “new global order” built on shared democratic values, strategic cooperation and a rules-based international system.

Von der Leyen said a successful and stable India contributes to global stability, prosperity and security, and that the partnership between the EU and India is poised to reach new heights. Her remarks come amid high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and delegates aimed at strengthening cooperation across trade, technology, security and defence.

The visit includes summit discussions expected to finalize a long-awaited free trade agreement (FTA) — described as potentially transformational for both economies — and formalize deeper security and defence ties. The leaders highlighted the symbolic participation of EU military staff and naval missions in the Republic Day parade as a sign of growing strategic engagement.

Analysts say the closer alignment signals a concerted effort by India and the EU to offer an alternative model of global cooperation amid geopolitical tensions, expanding their influence in global trade, security and multilateral diplomacy.
