Historic Day for BJP as Suvendu Adhikari Becomes Bengal Chief Minister

West Bengal entered a new political phase on Friday as senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the state’s first Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister. The ceremony, held in Kolkata under heavy security and massive public attention, marked a landmark moment in Bengal’s political history.

Thousands of BJP supporters gathered outside the venue waving party flags and celebrating what leaders described as the beginning of a “new era” for the state. Several senior BJP leaders and chief ministers from other states attended the swearing-in ceremony, turning the event into a major national political show.

Suvendu Adhikari, who emerged as one of the BJP’s strongest faces in Bengal over the past few years, pledged to focus on development, law and order, employment generation and industrial growth during his tenure. Addressing supporters after taking oath, he promised to work for “every citizen of Bengal without political discrimination”.

The BJP’s rise in West Bengal has been one of the most significant political developments in recent years. The party managed to expand its influence rapidly across the state, challenging the dominance of regional forces that had controlled Bengal politics for decades.

Political analysts believe the swearing-in ceremony represents more than just a change in government. Many see it as a major ideological and electoral shift in eastern India, where national parties historically struggled to gain strong control.

Meanwhile, opposition parties criticised the BJP and accused it of aggressive political campaigning and polarisation during the election period. However, BJP leaders dismissed the criticism and called the victory a reflection of public demand for change.

Security arrangements remained extremely tight throughout the ceremony, with police and central forces deployed across key areas in Kolkata to manage large crowds and prevent disruptions.

The new government is expected to announce its first cabinet decisions soon, with focus likely to remain on infrastructure, investment, welfare schemes and administrative reforms in the state.
