India Plans AI-Powered ‘Smart Borders’ to Tighten Security Along Pakistan and Bangladesh

India has announced a major push towards technology-driven border security with plans to introduce a “Smart Border” system along the country’s sensitive frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the initiative is designed to strengthen surveillance capabilities and reduce infiltration through the use of advanced digital monitoring systems.

The proposed project is expected to combine artificial intelligence, drone surveillance, thermal imaging cameras and ground sensors to create a modern security network capable of tracking suspicious movement in real time. Officials believe the use of technology will help security forces monitor difficult terrain more efficiently while improving response speed during potential threats.

The move comes amid growing concerns over cross-border infiltration, smuggling and illegal migration in several sensitive sectors. Security agencies have long argued that traditional fencing and manual patrolling alone are no longer sufficient to deal with increasingly sophisticated infiltration methods.

According to officials, the “Smart Border” framework will allow border forces to access live surveillance feeds from command centres equipped with AI-assisted monitoring systems. The project may also include automated alerts capable of identifying unusual movement patterns near restricted zones, especially during nighttime operations.

India shares thousands of kilometres of land border with Pakistan and Bangladesh, much of it passing through remote regions, forests, river belts and densely populated areas. Monitoring these regions has remained a logistical challenge for border security agencies for decades.

Amit Shah described the initiative as part of the government’s larger strategy to modernise internal security infrastructure and strengthen national defence using indigenous and advanced technologies. The government believes smart surveillance could reduce human risk while improving operational efficiency along highly sensitive borders.

Security experts say the project reflects a wider global shift towards technology-based border protection systems. Several countries have increasingly adopted AI-enabled surveillance tools, drones and sensor networks to monitor illegal crossings and manage national security threats more effectively.

Although detailed timelines and deployment plans have not yet been officially disclosed, pilot implementation of the Smart Border project is expected to begin in selected high-risk sectors before being expanded across other critical areas.
