India’s consumption engine is slowing — wage growth is the missing link

India’s much-celebrated consumption story is showing signs of strain, and the core issue lies in weak wage growth. While headline economic indicators suggest resilience — steady GDP expansion, robust tax collections, and rising corporate profits — household purchasing power tells a different story.

For a large segment of India’s workforce, particularly in the informal sector and lower-income urban and rural households, wages have not kept pace with inflation. Rising costs of essentials such as food, housing, healthcare, and education are squeezing disposable incomes, forcing consumers to cut back on discretionary spending. This imbalance has resulted in a two-speed consumption recovery, where premium goods and services continue to perform well while mass-market demand remains subdued.

The divergence is visible across sectors. High-end retail, travel, and luxury consumption are growing, driven by affluent urban consumers, while fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), entry-level automobiles, and small-ticket discretionary items are experiencing muted demand. Analysts argue that without broad-based income growth, India’s consumption-driven growth model risks losing momentum.

Sustained consumption revival will depend on real wage growth, job creation, and productivity gains across sectors. Policy measures aimed at boosting employment, strengthening manufacturing and MSMEs, and improving labour incomes will be critical. Without addressing the wage growth gap, India’s consumption story may struggle to deliver inclusive and durable economic growth.
