Mumbai Landslide Kills 3, Rescuers Use Victim-Detection Cameras To Search For Survivors

A deadly landslide struck Gaushiya Chawl in Ghatkopar's Chirag Nagar area of Mumbai early Wednesday, killing three people and triggering a major rescue operation. The incident occurred at around 3:48 am, according to information shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's Mumbai Fire Brigade.

The landslide occurred after a portion of a hillside collapsed, sending a large amount of mud and debris onto nearby houses. Initial reports suggested that two to three houses were affected and several people became trapped beneath the rubble.

Rescue teams from multiple agencies are working at the site to locate those still missing. Specialised victim-detection cameras are being used to search through the debris for signs of life, as rescuers continue to clear the rubble carefully.

Officials said four to five people are feared trapped under the debris, although the exact number of missing people remains unclear as the rescue operation continues.

Two injured people were also rescued and taken to hospital. They were identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, who sustained a back injury. Both are reported to be in stable condition.

Mumbai officials also visited the affected site to assess the situation and monitor the rescue operation. BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde announced financial assistance of ₹3 lakh for the families of those who died. The assistance will be provided through the District Collector's Office.

DCP Ganesh Shinde said emergency response teams and local authorities remain engaged in the search operation. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to a hospital for further procedures, while the Ghatkopar Police will conduct the necessary legal investigation.

With the possibility of survivors still trapped beneath the rubble, rescue personnel are continuing their search using specialised equipment and cameras. Further details are awaited as the operation progresses.
