Trump Praises ‘Strong’ Modi, Says New India–US Trade Deal in Progress

Speaking during an event in South Korea ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, Trump said, “I’m working on a trade deal with India. I have great respect and love for Prime Minister Modi — we have a very good relationship.”

His comments come amid ongoing discussions on trade and tariffs between the two countries. In August, Washington had imposed additional duties of up to 50% on Indian imports, citing concerns over India’s continued oil trade with Russia. New Delhi, however, has maintained that its energy decisions are based on national interest and the need for affordable energy supplies.

Trump also recalled what he described as a tense moment between India and Pakistan during his presidency. He claimed that his phone calls to both leaders helped avert a potential conflict. “They were ready to fight,” he said with a grin, “but after two days, they called back and said they understood. Modi is a tough guy, but we get along very well.”

The former US President’s latest remarks reflect a warmer tone toward India and its leadership, signaling optimism for improved bilateral trade ties in the months ahead.
