US Charges Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar in Hardeep Singh Nijjar Murder Plot, Expands Transnational Crime Probe

The United States has significantly widened its investigation into transnational organized crime by filing federal charges against jailed Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his close associate Goldy Brar over the alleged conspiracy to murder Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.

The indictment, filed in a US federal court, accuses the two gangsters of playing central roles in planning and coordinating Nijjar's assassination, which took place outside a Sikh gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023. Prosecutors allege that the conspiracy involved cross-border criminal networks operating across India, Canada, and the United States.

According to the court documents, investigators believe Lawrence Bishnoi directed elements of the alleged plot from prison through members of his organized crime syndicate, while Goldy Brar, who is believed to be based in North America, allegedly coordinated the network outside India. The indictment claims that surveillance, logistical support, and communication were used to facilitate the killing.

US authorities say the charges stem from a broader investigation into international criminal organizations involved in murder, extortion, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and violent organized crime. Officials described the case as part of a multinational effort to dismantle criminal syndicates operating across borders.

The indictment, however, does not accuse the Government of India or any Indian state agency of involvement in the murder conspiracy. Instead, it focuses specifically on the alleged actions of members of the Bishnoi crime syndicate and their associates.

The case has once again drawn international attention because Nijjar's killing previously triggered a major diplomatic dispute between Canada and India. Canadian authorities had alleged possible Indian involvement in the assassination, an allegation that India has consistently denied, calling it baseless and politically motivated.

The latest US legal action shifts attention toward the alleged role of organized crime networks in the case. Security experts say the indictment could strengthen international cooperation among law enforcement agencies investigating cross-border criminal syndicates and targeted killings.

The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors have indicated that additional evidence and further legal proceedings may follow as authorities continue examining the activities of the Bishnoi network across multiple jurisdictions.

If convicted on the US charges, those accused could face severe criminal penalties under American federal law. However, legal experts note that the indictment represents allegations by prosecutors, and all defendants remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
