“7.5-Magnitude Quake Prompts Evacuations Across Northern Japan”
A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan’s northeast coast Monday night, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuations for nearly 90,000 residents in Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate. Small tsunami waves were recorded, and authorities have lifted warnings—but aftershocks remain a risk.
A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan late Monday night, triggering tsunami warnings and prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.
The quake—which occurred around 11:15 p.m. local time off the coast of Aomori Prefecture—registered an “upper-6” on Japan’s seismic intensity scale in the city of Hachinohe, strong enough to make standing nearly impossible and cause heavy shaking.
Authorities issued emergency tsunami warnings for coastal prefectures, including Hokkaido and Aomori and Iwate Prefectures, ordering approximately 90,000 people to evacuate to safer inland or higher-ground areas
In the hours following the quake, tsunami waves of up to 70 centimeters (approx. 2 feet 4 inches) were recorded at ports such as Kuji Port in Iwate, and 50 cm or more at other coastal sites.
Thankfully, by early Tuesday morning all tsunami advisories were lifted, after no major destructive waves materialized.
So far, around 20–30 people have been reported injured—mostly from falling objects or structural impacts as buildings shook. Transport services, including regional rail and bullet-train lines, were temporarily suspended for inspections and safety checks.
The national government, led by Sanae Takaichi, has activated an emergency task force to coordinate disaster response, assess damage, and reassure the public.
Though the worst of the tsunami threat has passed, authorities continue to warn residents to stay alert for aftershocks and remain prepared for further seismic activity in the coming days.
