IMD Predicts Thunderstorms and Light Rain Across Delhi-NCR Today
Residents across Delhi-NCR are likely to witness dust storms, gusty winds, and light rainfall today as weather conditions shift after days of intense heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for thunderstorms and sudden weather activity across several parts of North India.
Weather conditions across Delhi-NCR are expected to change significantly today as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts dust storms, strong winds, and light rainfall in several areas of the region.
According to weather officials, cloudy skies and gusty winds may provide temporary relief from the intense heatwave conditions that have affected the national capital and surrounding cities over the past few days. Wind speeds could reach up to 50–70 kmph during thunderstorm activity in isolated areas.
The IMD has warned residents to remain cautious during sudden dust storms, especially during evening hours when weather activity is expected to intensify. Reduced visibility and traffic disruptions are also likely in some parts of the NCR region.
Areas including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, and parts of central Delhi may witness scattered showers accompanied by lightning and strong winds. The sudden weather shift is linked to western disturbances and moisture movement from nearby regions.
Experts say such pre-monsoon weather patterns are common during May, when extreme daytime heating combines with incoming moisture to trigger thunderstorms and dust storms across North India.
Despite the expected rainfall, temperatures in Delhi-NCR are likely to remain above seasonal averages, with daytime temperatures hovering between 39°C and 42°C. However, rain activity may temporarily improve air quality and reduce heat stress.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid open areas during lightning activity and secure loose outdoor objects due to the possibility of strong winds. Commuters have also been asked to remain alert for traffic congestion and sudden visibility drops during dust storms.
The changing weather pattern comes as several northern and eastern states continue witnessing unstable conditions, including thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and heatwave alerts in different regions.
Meanwhile, meteorologists are closely monitoring monsoon progression over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, with early indications suggesting favorable conditions for further seasonal advancement in the coming days.
Residents are advised to follow official IMD updates and local advisories as weather conditions may change rapidly throughout the day.
