Berlin Remarks Spark Row: BJP Says Rahul Gandhi Is Pushing Anarchy

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday launched a strong attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on Indian democracy during an interaction in Berlin, accusing him of “threatening anarchy” and damaging the country’s global image.

Reacting to Gandhi’s comments, in which he raised concerns about the health of democratic institutions in India, BJP leaders said it was irresponsible to make such statements abroad and alleged that the Congress leader was attempting to discredit the nation for political gain.

Senior BJP spokespersons said India’s democratic framework remains robust, pointing to regular elections, an independent judiciary and a free press. They accused Gandhi of repeatedly questioning constitutional institutions and creating distrust among the public.

“The opposition is free to raise issues within the country, but portraying India as undemocratic on foreign platforms is unacceptable and harmful,” a BJP leader said, adding that such remarks could undermine confidence in India’s governance.

The Congress, however, defended Gandhi’s comments, stating that highlighting democratic concerns is part of political discourse and essential for accountability. Party leaders maintained that raising such issues internationally does not amount to speaking against the nation.

The exchange marks the latest episode in the escalating war of words between the BJP and the Congress, with democracy, institutional independence and political dissent emerging as central themes ahead of upcoming elections
