Sydney, Australia—December 15, 2025 — A devastating terrorist attack shook Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, leaving at least 16 people dead and over 40 injured during a Hanukkah celebration, authorities confirmed.

The mass shooting unfolded around 6:47 p.m. local time on 14 December 2025, as hundreds of people had gathered for a community event, “Chanukah by the Sea,” to mark the first night of the Jewish festival.

Details of the Attack

Two gunmen opened fire on the crowd from a pedestrian bridge near the beach, sparking chaos and panic. Emergency services rushed to the scene with paramedics, special operations units, and law enforcement.

According to police and official sources:

  • Fatalities: At least 16 people are confirmed dead, including one of the attackers. The victims ranged in age from children to elderly adults.

  • Injuries: At least 42 people were injured, including two police officers and numerous civilians taken to hospitals across Sydney.

  • Attackers: Authorities report two gunmen were involved. One was killed at the scene by responding officers, and the second was wounded and taken into custody.

  • An improvised explosive device was later found and safely removed from a vehicle linked to one of the suspects.

A courageous bystander reportedly tackled and disarmed one of the shooters during the attack, potentially saving many lives.

Official Response

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the assault as a “deliberate terrorist attack” and an act of antisemitism, directly targeting the Jewish community.

New South Wales authorities have declared the incident a terrorist act and have heightened security around cultural and religious gatherings nationwide.

“An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian,” Albanese said, shortly after convening the national security committee to coordinate the government’s response.

Impact and Reactions

The attack has shocked Australia and drawn global condemnation. World leaders and community figures have expressed solidarity with the victims and their families.

The Jewish community in Sydney, still reeling from the tragedy, has received support from across the nation. Vigils and memorials are expected throughout the week as investigations continue.
