The resignation will come after his final cabinet meeting, following which he is likely to submit his resignation to the Governor at Raj Bhavan in Patna. This move paves the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to appoint a new Chief Minister, marking a major shift in the state’s power structure.

According to reports, the BJP legislature party will hold a crucial meeting today to elect its leader, who will then be endorsed by the NDA alliance. The new Chief Minister is expected to take oath on April 15, 2026.

This transition is particularly significant as it could lead to the BJP heading the Bihar government with its own Chief Minister for the first time, despite being a long-time alliance partner in the state.

Meanwhile, sources indicate that senior BJP leaders are closely involved in the selection process, and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been appointed as a central observer to oversee the decision-making.

Among the potential contenders, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is emerging as a frontrunner, although the final decision will be taken after consultations within the party and NDA allies.

Despite stepping down, Nitish Kumar’s party, JD(U), is expected to remain part of the ruling alliance and may retain influence in the new government, possibly through key positions like Deputy Chief Minister.

This development marks a crucial turning point in Bihar politics, signaling a reshaping of alliances and leadership ahead of future electoral battles.
