Vaishno Devi Silver Donation Scam Exposed: Majority of Offerings Found Fake, Toxic Metals Detected in Shrine Contributions

The probe revealed that many items labelled as silver contained only a small fraction of actual silver content, with the rest made up of base metals such as iron and cadmium. In several samples, genuine silver content was reported to be as low as 5–6%, raising concerns over both financial misrepresentation and public health risks. Cadmium, in particular, is a toxic heavy metal known to pose serious health hazards with prolonged exposure.

The shrine authorities had earlier estimated the total value of silver offerings to be in the range of several hundred crore rupees. However, after verification, the actual recoverable value has been significantly reduced, with reports suggesting a drastic shortfall compared to earlier projections. This discrepancy has highlighted possible systemic issues in the procurement, donation, and verification processes associated with religious offerings.

The findings have triggered concerns over consumer fraud in pilgrimage-related markets, where devotees often purchase offerings in good faith. Experts have called for stricter quality control mechanisms, transparent certification systems, and stronger regulatory oversight to prevent exploitation in religious donation ecosystems.

Authorities are expected to further investigate the supply chains involved in producing and selling these counterfeit silver items. Meanwhile, public awareness campaigns may be introduced to educate pilgrims about verifying the authenticity of precious metal offerings before purchase.
