Australian Beef Exports to Europe Set to Rise Under New EU Trade Agreement
Australia will be able to export more beef to Europe under a new free trade deal with the European Union, although exports will still be limited by quota systems.
Australia is expected to send more beef to Europe after signing a long-awaited free trade agreement with the European Union, marking a major step in trade relations between the two economies. The deal concludes nearly a decade of negotiations and aims to increase trade in agriculture, minerals, and manufactured goods between Australia and Europe.
Under the agreement, the European Union will expand quotas that allow Australian beef to enter Europe at lower tariffs. Reports suggest the deal could allow around 30,000 tonnes of Australian beef exports to the EU each year, giving Australian farmers greater access to the European market. However, exports will still be controlled through quota limits rather than completely tariff-free access.
The broader trade agreement includes tariff reductions on many goods, increased trade in wine, seafood, minerals, and agricultural products, and improved investment and business cooperation between the two regions. The deal is also seen as part of Europe’s strategy to diversify trade partners and reduce reliance on China and the United States.
Despite the increase in beef access, some Australian farming groups have criticized the agreement, arguing that the quota expansion is smaller than expected and does not fully open the European market to Australian meat exports. Still, the agreement is expected to boost overall trade and strengthen economic ties between Australia and the European Union over the coming years.
