India Bought Millions of Earbuds. Are We Also Buying a Hearing Crisis?

India’s growing dependence on wireless earbuds and headphones is raising concerns among ENT specialists. Constant exposure to loud audio and prolonged device use may contribute to tinnitus, temporary hearing fatigue and hearing problems, particularly among younger users. Doctors are urging people to keep volumes low, limit listening time and get regular hearing checks.

India Bought Millions of Earbuds. Are We Also Buying a Hearing Crisis?

Wireless earbuds have become a part of everyday life in India. Whether it is travelling on the metro, taking a cab, working out, making calls, gaming, or watching OTT content, millions of people now spend hours with earbuds in their ears.

But as this habit grows, doctors are raising an important question: could India's earbud boom also be creating a future hearing-health problem?

According to ENT specialist Dr. P. Harihara Murthy, the complaints appearing in clinical settings are increasingly coming from younger people.

Younger People Reporting Hearing Problems

Problems such as tinnitus, reduced hearing, and persistent ear discomfort were traditionally associated more often with older adults.

However, doctors are increasingly seeing younger people reporting similar complaints.

Tinnitus is particularly concerning. It refers to the sensation of hearing a sound, such as ringing or buzzing, even when there is no external sound producing it.

According to Dr. Murthy, frequent use of personal audio devices, combined with long screen hours and late-night routines, can put additional stress on the auditory system.

The Problem Is Not Just One Loud Song

One of the biggest concerns is that hearing damage can be cumulative.

It is not necessarily a single loud song or a long phone call that creates the problem. Instead, repeated exposure to loud sound over long periods can cause the ears to become fatigued.

Initially, this may result in temporary changes in hearing. But continued excessive exposure can potentially lead to more serious and lasting hearing problems.

This is why doctors recommend giving the ears regular breaks instead of using earbuds continuously for several hours.

Never Use Earbuds to Clean Your Ears

There is another common habit that ENT specialists strongly discourage—using earbuds or similar objects to clean earwax.

Instead of removing wax, inserting objects into the ear canal can push the wax deeper. It may also irritate or injure the ear canal and, in some cases, damage the eardrum.

Impacted wax itself can contribute to symptoms such as blocked hearing or ringing in the ears.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Many people ignore early signs of hearing problems and wait for the symptoms to become severe.

One warning sign is difficulty understanding conversations in places where you normally have no trouble hearing people.

If you notice persistent ringing in your ears, reduced hearing, ear pain, or difficulty understanding speech, an ENT consultation and hearing evaluation can help determine the cause.

How to Use Earbuds More Safely

Experts recommend adopting a few simple habits:

  • Keep the volume as low as comfortably possible.
  • Avoid listening continuously for several hours.
  • Take regular breaks between listening sessions.
  • Consider periodic hearing checks if you use personal audio devices frequently.
  • Never insert earbuds or other objects into the ear canal to remove wax.
  • Seek medical advice if you experience persistent tinnitus or hearing difficulties.

Earbuds themselves are not necessarily the problem. The bigger concern is how loudly, how frequently, and for how long they are being used.

India's earbud boom has created a new everyday habit. Whether that habit eventually becomes a larger hearing-health challenge will depend largely on how people manage their listening habits today.
