Pune Pediatric Specialist Warns: Children Are Increasingly Facing High Cholesterol, Risks Long-Term Health

High cholesterol is no longer an adult-only concern. Experts in Pune are raising alarms as children are increasingly showing elevated cholesterol levels, a trend that could pave the way for serious health problems if left unaddressed.

Rising Cholesterol Among Kids
Dr. Sajili Mehta, a consultant pediatric endocrinologist at Surya Mother and Child Super Speciality Hospital, Pune, confirmed to HT Lifestyle that high cholesterol in children is becoming a growing concern. “This is not restricted to any single demographic. Modern lifestyles, high-fat diets, and increased consumption of processed foods have driven cholesterol levels up globally,” she explained.

Data highlights the issue: a 2017 survey in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, revealed over 25% of school-aged children had cholesterol levels above 190 mg/dL. Internationally, nearly 21% of US children aged 6–19 also recorded at least one abnormal cholesterol reading.

Causes Behind the Trend
The spike in pediatric cholesterol levels is mainly linked to two lifestyle changes: unhealthy eating patterns and decreased physical activity. Dr. Mehta elaborated:

·         Processed and fast foods, sugary drinks, and snacks high in unhealthy fats contribute significantly to elevated “bad” cholesterol.

·         Increased screen time and sedentary habits reduce daily physical activity, limiting calorie burn and metabolic efficiency.

·         Genetics can also play a role, as some children inherit a predisposition to high cholesterol.

Warning Signs for Parents
Dr. Mehta advised parents to watch for indicators such as rapid weight changes, persistent fatigue, and breathing difficulties. Any of these symptoms warrant immediate medical consultation.

Consequences of Ignoring High Cholesterol
Unchecked cholesterol can damage arteries early in life. “Children with high cholesterol are at risk of premature plaque buildup in arteries, increasing the likelihood of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes,” said Dr. Mehta. She stressed that arterial complications may begin appearing as early as adolescence if poor lifestyle habits persist.

Prevention and Management Tips
Parents can take proactive steps to safeguard their children’s health:

1.      Balanced Diet: Encourage nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, fruits, and whole grains while limiting fried and sugary foods.

2.      Regular Physical Activity: Children should engage in at least 60 minutes of exercise daily, which can include evening walks, sports, or playful outdoor activities.

3.      Routine Health Checks: Regular pediatric screenings, especially for families with a history of heart disease, are crucial for early detection and management of high cholesterol.

Dr. Mehta concluded, “Awareness and timely intervention are key. Addressing cholesterol in childhood can prevent long-term complications and ensure healthier adult lives.”
