Trump Administration Broadens Immigration Raids to Additional U.S. Cities

The Trump administration has extended its nationwide immigration enforcement campaign to New Orleans and Minneapolis. In New Orleans, the operation—dubbed Operation Catahoula Crunch—was launched targeting non-citizens deemed criminal or previously arrested for violent crimes such as home invasion, armed robbery, grand theft auto, and rape.

Federal officials reportedly deployed hundreds of agents to the metropolitan area, with a stated goal of carrying out as many as 5,000 arrests.  Meanwhile, in Minneapolis–Saint Paul, the crackdown expanded to include a surge by immigration authorities focusing particularly on Somali immigrants—amid rising concern among Minnesota’s large Somali-American community.

Even on the first day of operation, arrests were underway: in Minneapolis, authorities detained a mix of individuals—some with criminal records and some without—prompting critics to warn of racial profiling and wrongful detentions.

Local officials in both cities have denounced the raids. In New Orleans, community leaders and immigrant-rights groups expressed alarm over aggressive enforcement tactics, claiming innocent residents and even U.S. citizens have been wrongly targeted. In Minneapolis, city leaders stressed they will not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement and urged residents to report any suspicious detentions.
