UN Watchdog Calls on Israel to Probe Torture Allegations in Gaza

On Friday, November 28, a United Nations committee urged Israel to investigate reports of torture and ill-treatment of Palestinians in Gaza. The UN body warned that such practices have "gravely intensified" since the outbreak of war in October 2023.

In its statement, the committee highlighted concerns over the disproportionate nature of Israel’s military response, which it said has resulted in widespread loss of life and severe suffering for Palestinian civilians. Reports suggest a de facto state policy of organized and systematic torture, intensifying after October 7, 2023, when Hamas and other groups launched attacks against Israel.

The committee, composed of 10 independent experts who monitor the implementation of international anti-torture conventions, emphasized that it unequivocally condemns the attacks by Hamas and allied groups on that date.

In addition to calling for investigations into torture claims, the UN experts urged Israel to prosecute those responsible, including superior officers, and to ensure immediate entry of humanitarian aid and personnel into Gaza to address urgent needs.

The committee’s statement underscores growing international concerns over the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict and the need for accountability on all sides.
