Gujarat Schools May Hold Classes on Holidays to Cover Syllabus After Heavy Rain Disrupts Studies

Heavy rainfall and flooding across several districts of Gujarat have affected normal academic activities in schools, prompting the state Education Department to explore additional teaching days to make up for the lost classroom time.

The situation has been particularly challenging in South Gujarat, where districts including Navsari, Valsad and Surat witnessed heavy rainfall and flooding. The disruption affected daily life as well as the functioning of educational institutions.

With studies taking a hit, the Education Department has now placed syllabus completion among its key priorities. Officials have indicated that schools may need to conduct classes on certain holidays if required to compensate for the academic time lost due to adverse weather conditions.

Education Department Principal Secretary (Primary and Secondary Education) Milind Torawane said that the state curriculum requires around 220 academic days. Even after accounting for Sundays, summer vacations and winter holidays, there are normally enough working days to complete the required academic schedule.

However, the recent disruption caused by heavy rain and flooding has reduced the available classroom time in affected areas. The department is therefore assessing how the academic calendar can be adjusted without compromising the prescribed curriculum.

The focus is particularly on ensuring that students do not face difficulties during examinations because of portions of the syllabus remaining incomplete. Schools may therefore use available holidays or additional instructional days, depending on the academic requirements and local situation.

The rainfall has also affected students in another way. In some rain-hit districts, school textbooks were damaged or destroyed because of flooding and waterlogging. The Education Department has sought information from the affected districts regarding students who need replacement books.

Based on the information received, arrangements will be made to provide new textbooks to students whose study material was damaged in the floods.

The recent weather conditions have caused significant disruption across parts of Gujarat, with Navsari, Valsad and Surat among the areas affected by heavy rainfall. Apart from disrupting education, rain-related incidents have also affected normal life in several districts.

For students, the immediate challenge is now to recover the academic time lost during the extreme weather. While the possibility of classes on holidays may place an additional burden on students and teachers, the Education Department's priority is to ensure that the prescribed syllabus and academic requirements are completed on schedule.
