Probe Launched After Air India Jet Engine Ingests Cargo Container at Delhi Airport
Authorities have ordered an investigation after an Air India aircraft suffered engine damage when a cargo container was sucked in while taxiing at Delhi’s IGI Airport.
An investigation has been initiated after an Air India aircraft sustained engine damage when a cargo container was ingested into one of its engines at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi. The incident occurred while the aircraft was taxiing on the runway area, prompting immediate safety checks and grounding of the plane.
According to preliminary information, the container is believed to have fallen from a ground-handling vehicle and remained on the taxiway before being sucked into the engine. No injuries were reported, and all passengers and crew were safe. The aircraft was later moved to its designated parking bay for detailed inspection and assessment.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a formal probe to examine lapses in ground-handling procedures, runway safety measures, and operations during low-visibility conditions. Air India has said it is cooperating fully with the investigation and has taken steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The incident has once again highlighted the critical importance of strict safety protocols in airport ground operations.
