Trump Says US Must ‘Own’ Greenland to Stop Russia and China
U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed his controversial call for the United States to acquire Greenland, saying Washington needs to “own” the strategically important Arctic island to prevent Russia and China from gaining influence or control there. Speaking to reporters, Trump argued that existing defense agreements and military presence are not sufficient to secure the region, claiming rival powers could otherwise move in and threaten U.S. national security interests. He said the United States would prefer to reach a deal through negotiation, describing it as the “easy way,” but added that America would act “whether they like it or not” if necessary. The remarks sparked strong reactions from Denmark and Greenland’s leadership, both of whom reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and that its future must be decided by its people. Trump’s comments have also raised concerns among European allies, with critics warning that such rhetoric could strain NATO relations and heighten tensions in the increasingly contested Arctic region.
