Trump Signals Potential U.S. Action on Venezuelan Drug Traffickers on Land

Mar-a-Lago, Nov 28 — U.S. President Donald Trump indicated Thursday that the United States could “very soon” expand operations against alleged Venezuelan drug traffickers to land targets, building on efforts that have largely focused on the Caribbean Sea. Speaking to U.S. troops around the world during Thanksgiving remarks, Trump thanked the Air Force’s 7th Bomb Wing for their role in deterring drug trafficking. “It’s about 85% stopped by sea … and we’ll be starting to stop them by land,” he said, adding that operations on land would be easier to execute and would begin soon.

Trump Signals Potential U.S. Action on Venezuelan Drug Traffickers on Land

The announcement comes amid increased U.S. military presence in the Caribbean, including the recent arrival of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, and nearly two dozen airstrikes on vessels allegedly carrying drugs, which the U.S. claims killed at least 82 people.

The Trump administration has also designated the Cartel de los Soles, reportedly linked to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organization. Maduro denies ties to the drug trade, accusing the U.S. of fabricating a campaign against his government.

While tensions rise, Trump has suggested that diplomatic channels remain possible, saying he might still hold talks with Maduro. “I might talk to him,” Trump said aboard Air Force One, noting ongoing discussions with his staff.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that operations against narcotraffickers would continue, emphasizing a sustained U.S. effort to curb trafficking from South America to Europe and beyond.

Military personnel participating in the Thanksgiving event praised Trump’s focus on counter-narcotics operations, sharing stories and affirming their readiness to support the mission.

Experts warn that expanding strikes onto land could escalate tensions with Venezuela while also complicating international diplomacy. The situation highlights the delicate balance between military action and potential negotiation amid ongoing regional security challenges.
