“Bacche Saans Nahi Lete?” Delhiites Protest for Clean Air at India Gate Amid Detentions

NEW DELHI – Hundreds of concerned citizens gathered at the iconic India Gate on Sunday, protesting against Delhi’s worsening air quality. Wearing gas masks, holding Constitution copies, and even bringing children, the demonstrators called for urgent measures to combat toxic pollution that has gripped the city for weeks.

Police detained dozens of protesters for gathering without prior permission, sparking widespread reactions from politicians, civil society members, and environmental activists. Videos circulating on social media showed officers escorting protesters — including some with children — to police vehicles, prompting outrage.

One striking exchange captured in a viral video saw a protester challenge an officer, asking: “Bacche saans nahi lete kya?” (“Do kids not breathe?”), highlighting citizens’ concern for children’s health amidst hazardous air quality.

Government Response and Political Reactions

Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa defended the state government’s efforts, stating that anti-smog guns, dust mitigation measures, and increased e-vehicle deployment are underway. However, he also criticized the previous AAP government, saying, “They made the air poisonous continuously for 10 years. The damage of 10 years cannot be corrected in just 7 months.”

Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, condemned the detentions, emphasizing that clean air is a fundamental human right and peaceful protesters should not face criminal treatment. AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj accused government agencies of data manipulation, fueling public distrust and prompting well-educated citizens to join the protests.

Environmental activist Vimlendu Jha also raised concerns on social media, alleging that even children were being detained during the demonstration. The protest has reignited debates about Delhi’s long-standing pollution crisis, government accountability, and citizens’ rights to safe air and peaceful protest.
