Cornell University to Pay $60 Million to Restore Federal Funding in Deal with Trump Administration
United States, November 7, 2025 — Cornell University has agreed to pay $60 million to resolve disputes with the Trump administration and restore federal research funding that was withheld amid civil rights investigations.
Under the agreement, the university will pay $30 million directly to the U.S. government and $30 million toward research programs supporting American farmers. Cornell has also accepted the administration’s interpretation of certain civil rights laws as part of the deal.
Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff stated that the agreement upholds the university’s academic freedom while enabling the restoration of more than $250 million in federal research funding, which had been frozen during the ongoing investigations into alleged civil rights violations.
The resolution ends months of scrutiny and ensures that Cornell can continue its research initiatives without further federal restrictions, balancing compliance with continued academic pursuits.
