DC Mayor Muriel Bowser Announces She Will Not Seek Fourth Term, Sparking Crowded Race

Washington D.C. – After a decade at the helm of the U.S. capital, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Tuesday that she will not seek re-election next year, stepping aside after three terms in office. Bowser, first elected in 2015, cited her desire to focus on the future and leave a foundation for new leadership.

“It has been the honour of my life to be your mayor,” Bowser said in a video announcement. “But today, with a grateful heart, I am announcing that I will not seek a fourth term… For the next 12 months, let's run through the tape and keep winning for DC.”

During her tenure, Bowser steered the city through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, housing crises, and infrastructure development in low-income neighborhoods. Her leadership also came under national scrutiny during clashes with former President Donald Trump, notably over the deployment of National Guard troops and federal agents during protests and the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol riot.

Bowser approved a Black Lives Matter mural leading up to the White House, sparking tensions with Trump and Republican lawmakers. Though a federal judge later ruled parts of Trump’s deployment of troops illegal, the controversy underscored the unique governance challenges faced by the District, which relies heavily on federal oversight and funding.

Her decision to step down opens the field to a competitive race in the Democratic stronghold. At least four candidates have already filed to run in the November 2025 election, with more expected to join from the city council.

Throughout her career, Bowser has championed DC statehood, advocating for local leaders and residents to have greater control over the city’s laws and budget. As the city prepares for a transition, her legacy will be defined by efforts to expand housing, support local communities, and navigate the delicate balance between city autonomy and federal authority.
