Delhi Blast Probe Widens: Kanpur Medical College Cardiologist Detained Over Alleged Links to Terror Network

Investigators say Arif’s name surfaced during the scrutiny of phone records belonging to Dr. Shaheen Shahid, the Lucknow-based doctor arrested earlier this month for her alleged involvement in the terror module believed to span from Kashmir to the Delhi-NCR region.

Detention Followed Intelligence Alerts

According to officials familiar with the operation, Dr. Arif was detained from his rented accommodation in Ashok Nagar, Kanpur, during a late-evening raid.

“Acting on intelligence inputs, ATS conducted a search of the premises and detained him for questioning. His electronic devices, mobile phones, and communication logs were seized for forensic examination,”
an officer said.

Investigators also questioned Arif’s landlord and examined rental documentation as part of standard verification procedures.

Sources confirm that investigators are examining months-long communication between Dr. Arif and Dr. Shaheen, though no formal charges have yet been announced.

Medical College Confirms Detention, Seeks Details

Authorities at Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College confirmed they were informed after the ATS action.

Head of Cardiology, Dr. Umeshwar Pandey, stated:

“We only know that ATS took Dr. Arif for questioning. Beyond that, we have no information.”

College officials added that Dr. Arif, who recently joined as a first-year resident, had been living outside the campus due to limited hostel capacity.

Who Is Dr. Mohammad Arif?

·         A resident of Jammu & Kashmir,

·         Completed MBBS and MD before joining GSVM

·         Studied at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum)

·         Undergoing advanced training in interventional cardiology under the NEET-SS 2024 batch

·         Known among colleagues as quiet and academically driven, according to campus sources

Investigators emphasize that his detention is for questioning, and his role—if any—in the alleged network remains under scrutiny.

Link to Faridabad Module Case

Arif’s name reportedly appeared during review of phone records belonging to Dr. Shaheen Shahid, arrested on November 9.
Dr. Shaheen, once a government medical lecturer in Kanpur, is accused of being in close contact with Muzammil Ahmad Ganaia, considered a key suspect in the terror module.

Officials allege that Shaheen had been residing in Faridabad with Ganaia and was in personal contact with multiple individuals placed under surveillance.

The Uttar Pradesh ATS has described the Faridabad module as part of a larger network with potential cross-state linkages.

Investigation Continues, No Charges Filed Yet

Both ATS and NIA stress that detentions at this stage are preliminary and investigative, aimed at mapping communication trails, financial patterns, and personal movements of individuals connected—directly or indirectly—with the suspects already arrested.

A senior official said:

“The case is complex and multi-layered. Detentions do not imply guilt. They are part of a wider information-gathering exercise.”

Forensic analysis of seized devices is expected to guide the next phase of the probe.
