Delhi cyber fraud gang busted in “digital arrest” scam
Delhi Police have busted a cyber fraud gang involved in running a fake “digital arrest” scam, in which victims were allegedly intimidated online by criminals posing as police or government officials to extort money.
According to officials, the accused used fake identities, forged documents, and threatening video or voice calls to convince victims that they were under investigation. Victims were then pressured to transfer money to “settle” the fabricated cases.
How the scam operated
Investigators revealed that the gang:
- Posed as law enforcement officers or central agencies
- Claimed victims were involved in serious crimes
- Kept victims under psychological pressure through continuous calls
- Demanded money transfers for “verification” or “case closure”
🚔 Police action
Based on technical surveillance and complaint tracking, police:
- Identified and arrested several members of the gang
- Seized mobile phones, SIM cards, and digital evidence
- Began tracing financial transactions linked to the scam
Officials said further investigation is underway to identify larger networks and possible interstate links.
Public advisory
Police have warned citizens that:
- No agency conducts “digital arrest” online
- Government officials never demand money over calls or video chats
- People should immediately report suspicious calls to cybercrime helplines
