Dense Fog Causes Multi‑Vehicle Pile‑Up on Yamuna Expressway; Buses Catch Fire, Several Injured
Multiple buses and cars collided on the Yamuna Expressway amid dense fog, triggering fires that killed and injured dozens. Rescue operations are underway as authorities probe the cause and warn drivers to avoid travel in low visibility
MATHURA, UTTAR PRADESH — A major accident on the Yamuna Expressway early Tuesday morning left several people dead and dozens injured after multiple buses and cars collided in dense fog, and several buses caught fire, authorities said. At around 4 a.m. near milestone 127 under Baldev police limits, extremely low visibility due to thick winter fog contributed to a chain reaction crash involving seven to eight buses and three cars, officials and media reports confirmed.
The impact of the collision caused some buses to burst into flames, creating chaos as passengers attempted to escape. Firefighters and emergency crews rushed to the scene with multiple fire tenders and ambulances to control the blaze and evacuate survivors.
Police and local administrators confirmed that at least 13 people were killed in the crash and fire, while around 25–35 others sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious and were rushed to hospitals for treatment. Senior officials said the exact toll could change as rescue operations continue and more information comes in.
Eyewitnesses described very dense fog in the pre‑dawn hours that limited visibility to just a few meters, making it difficult for drivers to see vehicles ahead. Authorities are investigating whether speed and poor visibility were key factors in the pile‑up, which sparked a major emergency response.
Traffic police have urged motorists traveling in the region to take extreme caution, reduce speed, and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy fog conditions, which have been linked to several accidents on major expressways in northern India this winter.
