Europe aviation sector alerts EU over possible jet fuel shortage

The warning comes as global oil and jet fuel supply chains continue to face pressure due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have significantly reduced fuel shipments through one of the world’s most critical energy routes.

The Airports Council International (ACI) Europe, representing hundreds of airports across the region, has alerted EU authorities that prolonged disruption could lead to a “systemic fuel shortage”, potentially forcing airlines to reduce schedules or cancel flights.

Key concerns raised by the aviation sector:

  • Sharp rise in jet fuel prices across global markets
  • Reduced fuel availability at European airports
  • Risk of flight cancellations during peak holiday season
  • Increased operating costs for airlines and passengers

Airlines have also warned that smaller carriers and regional airports would be most vulnerable, as they have limited fuel storage and financial buffers to handle prolonged supply disruptions.

Industry experts say Europe is particularly exposed because it relies heavily on imported fuel, with a significant share historically routed through Middle Eastern supply chains.

 Economic impact risks

Analysts caution that if the situation continues:

  • Air travel costs could rise further
  • Tourism-dependent economies may be affected
  • Inflationary pressure could increase due to higher transport costs

Some airlines have already started adjusting schedules and increasing fuel surcharges in anticipation of continued volatility.

 Outlook

While diplomatic efforts are ongoing to stabilize the Strait of Hormuz, aviation leaders say uncertainty remains high, and contingency planning is urgently needed to avoid widespread disruption in European air travel.
