Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano Erupts Again: Fiery Lava Flows Light Up the Big Island

Hawaii, USA – Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano is once again putting on a dramatic display, as streams of molten lava flowed overnight from its vents in Volcanoes National Park. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that this activity signals the approach of another eruption, expected to intensify over the next few days.

Kilauea, located on the Big Island, is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It has erupted intermittently for nearly a year, and this upcoming episode is anticipated to be the volcano’s 37th eruption since December of last year. Each eruption is marked by fountains of molten lava shooting high into the sky, creating breathtaking, yet carefully monitored, spectacles.

“Visitors to the park can safely witness the lava flows,” USGS officials said, noting that all activity is confined within the boundaries of Volcanoes National Park. No residential areas or structures are under immediate threat.

The latest lava overflows began Friday morning and persisted through the weekend, streaming from Kilauea’s north and south vents. The USGS has been providing constant updates via the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and a live stream that captures the cascading rivers of molten rock and rising plumes of smoke.

While gas emissions containing sulfur dioxide were visible from both vents, levels remained consistent with what scientists call an “eruption pause,” ranging from 1,200 to 1,500 metric tonnes per day—roughly 1,300 to 1,650 U.S. tons daily.

Residents and visitors are advised to follow safety guidelines and stay informed through USGS updates, as the volcanic activity is expected to continue through at least the early part of the week.

Volcano enthusiasts and photographers are flocking to the park to witness Kilauea’s fiery display firsthand, capturing dramatic shots of molten lava illuminating the night sky—a reminder of nature’s raw power and beauty.
