Humanitarian Crisis in North Darfur Worsens After Fall of El Fasher, UN Reports

Khartoum, Sudan: The United Nations has warned that conditions in North Darfur remain dire following the capture of its capital, El Fasher, as civilians continue to face violence and insecurity. The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said thousands of residents are fleeing the city, seeking refuge in Tawila, a town about 40 kilometers away, while access to El Fasher for aid workers remains largely blocked.

In Tawila, UN agencies and local partners are registering incoming displaced families and attempting to provide emergency relief. However, significant shortages persist, including shelter, medical supplies, food, trauma care, and psychosocial support.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that over 62,000 people were forced to leave El Fasher and nearby areas between October 26 and 29. Ongoing insecurity along escape routes continues to impede safe movement.
OCHA has reiterated its call for urgent, flexible funding, noting that less than a third of Sudan’s $4.2 billion humanitarian response plan has been funded so far.
