India Builds Shinkun La Tunnel: Strategic Nimmu-Padam-Darcha Road to Boost Army Access to China Border

New Delhi: India is accelerating work on critical strategic infrastructure connecting Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, with the aim of strengthening mobility and logistics in one of the country's most challenging mountainous regions.

As part of these efforts, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Director General Lieutenant General Harpal Singh (AVSM, VSM) visited Project Yojak from August 18 to 20, 2026, to review the progress of key infrastructure projects, including the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha Road and Shinkun La Tunnel.

The projects are strategically significant because they are expected to improve all-weather connectivity across the Himalayan region and provide an alternative route towards the strategically important areas of Ladakh.

Project Yojak Focuses on Difficult Himalayan Terrain

Lieutenant General Harpal Singh's three-day visit focused on assessing ongoing construction and infrastructure development under Project Yojak.

The project involves building critical roads and tunnels through some of the most difficult terrain in the country, where extreme weather, high altitude and challenging geological conditions make construction particularly demanding.

During the review, special attention was given to the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha route, which is being developed to strengthen connectivity between Ladakh, the Zanskar region and Himachal Pradesh.

Nimmu-Padam-Darcha Road: Strategic Connectivity

The Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road is considered strategically important because it provides an additional connectivity route towards Ladakh.

Improved connectivity through the route can help facilitate the movement of personnel, equipment and essential supplies in the high-altitude region.

For the armed forces, stronger road connectivity can be particularly important in areas where difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions can otherwise make logistics challenging.

Shinkun La Tunnel: Key Infrastructure Project

The Shinkun La Tunnel is another major component of the strategic infrastructure push.

The tunnel is being developed to provide more reliable connectivity through the high-altitude Shinkun La region. By reducing dependence on difficult mountain passes, such infrastructure can improve the movement of people and supplies across the region.

The tunnel and road network are expected to strengthen India's overall border connectivity infrastructure in the western Himalayas.

BRO Reviews Progress

During his Project Yojak visit, Lieutenant General Harpal Singh reviewed the progress of ongoing works and assessed the challenges involved in completing infrastructure projects in the difficult Himalayan environment.

The visit comes amid continued emphasis on completing major strategic infrastructure projects within their planned timelines.

The development of the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road and Shinkun La Tunnel is expected to improve regional connectivity and logistics while strengthening India's infrastructure network in strategically important areas close to the China border.
