‘Personally Meet Students’: Rahul Gandhi Urges Hemant Soren to Resolve Jharkhand Recruitment Exam Row

The ongoing Jharkhand student protest over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations has taken a fresh political turn after Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi wrote to Chief Minister Hemant Soren on August 17, 2026.

In his letter, Gandhi urged Soren to personally meet representatives of the protesting students and take steps to resolve their remaining grievances. He emphasised that peaceful protest is an important democratic right and said the students' concerns should be addressed through dialogue.

The agitation in Ranchi has been continuing for nearly 24 days, with students and job aspirants raising allegations of irregularities and lack of transparency in recruitment examinations conducted by bodies including the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) and the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC).

One of the major flashpoints is the JSSC Combined Graduate Level (JSSC-CGL) examination, with protesters demanding stronger action over alleged irregularities. Several protesters have also demanded a CBI investigation into the examination process and cancellation of the disputed examination.

The protest has intensified in recent weeks. On August 10, thousands of job aspirants marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly, where the situation escalated after protesters breached barricades. Police used measures including tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd.

The movement has also included hunger strikes. Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto has been on hunger strike, while reports on August 17 said several protesters were continuing an indefinite hunger strike. The prolonged agitation has increased pressure on the state government to find a settlement.

The Hemant Soren government, meanwhile, has taken some steps in response to the wider controversy. The Chief Minister announced the cancellation of the 14th JPSC Civil Services examination, along with other measures aimed at reforming the recruitment process. The government has also indicated that it wants greater transparency in future examinations.

According to Rahul Gandhi's letter, the state government has already initiated dialogue with the protesters through a committee and there is reportedly agreement on some of their demands. However, the protests have continued because several issues remain unresolved. Gandhi specifically pointed to the fact that some students are still on an indefinite hunger strike.

Rahul Gandhi's intervention is politically significant because the Congress is part of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand. His appeal to the Chief Minister to personally engage with the protesters therefore puts additional pressure on the state government to address the issue directly.

The BJP has also stepped up its criticism of the Soren government over the protests, questioning why the administration has not agreed to the students' demand for a CBI probe. The political dispute has consequently grown alongside the students' original concerns over recruitment and examination transparency.

For now, the focus is on whether the fresh round of dialogue between the government and the protesters can break the deadlock. Rahul Gandhi's call for a direct meeting between Hemant Soren and student representatives could add momentum to those efforts.

The larger issue, however, remains the demand for a fair, transparent and credible recruitment examination system. With thousands of young job aspirants involved, the outcome of the ongoing talks could have implications beyond the current examinations and influence how recruitment processes are conducted in Jharkhand in the future.
