Jobs at Risk, Irreversible Market Loss if US Tariffs Continue: Textile Exporters Warn Vice President
Indian textile exporters have sounded the alarm over prolonged US tariffs, cautioning that continued trade barriers could trigger large-scale job losses and permanently erode India’s share in a highly competitive global market.
India’s textile exporting community has raised serious concerns over the impact of continued US tariffs, warning that prolonged trade barriers could lead to widespread job losses and irreversible damage to the country’s export competitiveness. In a detailed missive to the Vice President, industry representatives flagged mounting pressure on manufacturers already grappling with rising costs, slowing global demand, and intensifying competition from rival exporting nations.
Exporters argue that tariffs have made Indian textile products less price-competitive in the US — one of their largest and most crucial markets. As buyers increasingly shift sourcing to countries enjoying preferential trade access, Indian firms risk losing long-standing relationships built over decades. The industry fears that once these supply chains are disrupted, regaining lost market share will be extremely difficult.
The letter also highlights the social impact of the slowdown, noting that the textile sector is among India’s largest employment generators, particularly for women and semi-skilled workers. Any sustained decline in exports, exporters warn, could trigger factory closures, wage cuts, and job losses across textile hubs.
Calling for urgent diplomatic and policy-level intervention, exporters have urged the government to intensify trade negotiations with the US and explore interim relief measures to cushion the sector. Without timely action, they caution, the combined effect of tariffs and global uncertainty could weaken one of India’s most labour-intensive industries and blunt its export growth momentum for years to come.
