Justice Surya Kant Sworn in as 53rd Chief Justice of India
President Droupadi Murmu administers oath as Justice Kant begins tenure of just over a year
New Delhi, November 24, 2025 – Justice Surya Kant took the oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday at Rashtrapati Bhawan, marking the beginning of a tenure expected to last a little over a year. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath in a solemn ceremony attended by top dignitaries, senior judges, and government officials.
The appointment comes just days after Justice Kant, as part of the 16th Presidential Reference Bench, advised President Murmu on constitutional matters relating to State Bills. In the advisory, the bench clarified that neither the President nor State Governors are bound by Supreme Court-imposed timelines when handling legislation, a significant clarification following the April 8 ruling in the Tamil Nadu Governor case.
Justice Kant’s elevation to Chief Justice underscores his decades-long experience on the bench, his deep engagement with constitutional law, and his reputation for judicious reasoning. Legal experts note that his tenure is expected to focus on strengthening judicial efficiency and upholding constitutional principles amid complex legal challenges.
With the Supreme Court playing a pivotal role in interpreting India’s Constitution, Justice Kant’s leadership is anticipated to shape important rulings over the coming year, reinforcing the court’s role as a guardian of democracy and justice.
