Kerala Becomes India’s First State Free from Extreme Poverty, Announces CM Pinarayi Vijayan
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: In a landmark announcement, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared the state free from extreme poverty, marking a historic milestone for India. The announcement was made during a special session of the state legislature, highlighting Kerala’s sustained efforts in social welfare and inclusive development.
Addressing lawmakers, CM Vijayan emphasized that decades of targeted government programs, effective policy implementation, and community-based initiatives have contributed to this achievement. “Kerala has shown that with proper planning and citizen participation, no one need live in extreme deprivation. Today, we have realized that vision,” he said.
Kerala’s success is attributed to comprehensive health care, universal education, effective social security schemes, and poverty alleviation programs, which have consistently focused on reaching the most vulnerable populations. The state’s model has often been cited nationally and internationally as a benchmark for social development.
Experts hailed the announcement as a historic achievement. Dr. Anitha Menon, a social development researcher, said, “Kerala’s approach demonstrates that systematic governance, coupled with community involvement, can eradicate extreme poverty even in a diverse society like India.”
The declaration is expected to boost public confidence in government programs and provide a template for other states aiming to achieve similar social welfare milestones.
CM Vijayan concluded, “While we celebrate this moment, our work is far from over. Ensuring quality of life, equitable growth, and sustainable livelihoods for all remains our ongoing commitment.”
With Kerala now officially extreme poverty-free, the state stands as an example of inclusive growth and social progress, inspiring policymakers across the country to adopt similar strategies.
