Mizoram Completes 58% Biometric Enrolment of Myanmar Refugees: Officials
Pudvi Times – News Report Aizawl, Mizoram: Mizoram has completed biometric enrolment of 58.15% of the 31,214 Myanmar refugees currently residing in the state, according to a Home Department official.
The official said that 10.84% of refugees from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts have also been registered. Enrolment began in July 2025 following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs, using the Foreigners Identification Portal and Biometric Enrolment system.
Refugee Distribution
- Myanmar refugees: 31,214 individuals across all 11 districts, with Champhai district hosting the largest number due to its border with Myanmar.
- Bangladesh refugees: 2,354 asylum seekers, mainly from the Bawm tribe, sheltered in Lawngtlai, Lunglei, and Thenzawl in Serchhip district.
- Internally displaced people from Manipur: 6,953 individuals also taking refuge across Mizoram.
So far, authorities have captured the biometric and biographic data of over 200 Bangladesh refugees.
Challenges in Registration
Officials cited several challenges in completing enrolment:
- Technical glitches and poor or absent internet connectivity in remote villages.
- Difficulty in collecting data from refugees living outside relief camps, such as those staying with relatives, friends, or in rented houses.
Background
Most Myanmar nationals, primarily from Chin state, fled to Mizoram after the military coup in February 2021. Meanwhile, Bawm tribe asylum seekers from Bangladesh arrived following a military offensive against an ethnic insurgent group in 2022.
Both the Chin community from Myanmar and the Bawm tribe from Bangladesh share close ethnic ties with the Mizos, easing integration in the state.
The enrolment process is expected to continue in the coming months as authorities aim to complete registration for all refugees and displaced persons.
