“NIA Arrests Kashmir Man in Delhi Blast Case: Car Used in Red Fort Explosion Was Registered in His Name”

According to the NIA, Ali played a critical role in facilitating the purchase of the Hyundai i20 that was later converted into a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED) for the suicide bombing.

Investigators say the car was purchased in his name, raising suspicions that Ali was deeply involved in the planning and logistics of the attack. Forensic examinations have confirmed that the bomber driving the vehicle was Dr. Umar Un Nabi, who lost his life in the explosion

Conspiracy and Network

The NIA alleges Ali conspired with Nabi to execute the attack, and travelled from Kashmir to Delhi specifically to help procure the car. During court hearings, Ali reportedly admitted owning the i20, the very car used in the blast, but showed “no remorse”, according to his lawyer.

In addition to Ali’s arrest, the NIA has also detained Jasir Bilal Wani, alias Danish, from Srinagar. According to the agency, Wani provided technical support for terror operations — including modifying drones and allegedly attempting to build rockets. These details suggest the Delhi car blast may be part of a larger terrorist network rather than an isolated act.

Investigation Underway

So far, the NIA reports that 73 witnesses have been examined in connection with the blast, including many who were wounded in the explosion. The agency is coordinating closely with Delhi Police, Jammu & Kashmir Police, Haryana Police, and Uttar Pradesh Police to unravel the full extent of the conspiracy.

A senior NIA official told media that reconstructing the bomber’s route is a priority: every checkpoint crossed, every halt, and every contact is being retraced to identify all persons involved.

Motive and Implications

The attack has already been officially recognized as a terrorist incident, significantly raising the stakes of the investigation. The fact that the vehicle was registered in the name of an aide rather than the bomber himself points to premeditation and a coordinated logistics chain.

Given the scale of the blast, and the sophisticated nature of the alleged conspiracy, national security experts are now probing deeper into whether more such modules exist, possibly financed or supported through international or cross-state networks.

Next Steps

  • The NIA is expected to seek extended custody for Amir Rashid Ali to further interrogate him on the funding, procurement, and recruitment aspects of the plot.
  • Analytical agencies are also examining other vehicles linked to Dr. Umar Nabi; one more car belonging to him has already been seized.
  • There is potential follow-up on financial trails, including hawala routes or terror financing that could have facilitated this intricate operation.

Authorities stress that while this arrest is a key milestone, it may just be the tip of the iceberg. The focus now shifts to dismantling the wider terrorist network behind the Red Fort blast and preventing any follow-up attacks.
